Old and rare and valuable books, the existence of which stands imperiled, have to be preserved and reprinted. These works are truly the muniments of culture. Responsible citizens in general, and scholars in particular, should willingly come forward to promote the perpetuity of these invaluable works.
Now, a word about the work reprinted by us. The work which we have reprinted is called by Kaivalya Navanitam. Srimad Tāndavarāya is the author of this work. He was born in 1409 A.D., to Mādgavananda and Ambika. These were Vāddima Brahmins of Nannilam.
The present work is a re-print of Dr.Charles Graul’s edition which appeared simultaneously in Leipzig and London in 1855. Dr.Graul was a great Tamil scholar. He translated the Tirukkural in to Latin and even today it is hailed as one of the best translations.
Dr.Graul’s edition Kaivalya Navanitam went out of print even during the last century. In view of its non-availability, it has now become the collector’s item to be bought only at a fancy price. To end rackets of this type our Sangkam comes forward to publish old and rare works.
